Let’s get started!

You get the idea, right?

How to Blend Essential Oils

In this section, I’ll teach you how to blend essential oils the right way.

Let’s begin!

What Scents and Aromas do You Like?

We all have unique preferences.

And when you’re creating an essential oil blend for yourself, you should keep in mind your unique preferences.

And, don’t be shy to test new things out!

Here are a few scents you can pick from:

Best essential oil blends and fragrances
The Best Essential Oil Blends can be made from these six fragrance groups

I personally love the spicy fragrances.

Let me know in the comments section which is your favorite!

Moving on…

It’s All About That (Top, Middle, and) Base!

I’m not talking about music here.

So, there are three ‘notes’ in a blend:

  • The top note
  • The middle note
  • The base note

These notes are determined by the amount of time they take to evaporate.

This means…

The ‘top note’ is the quickest to evaporate while the middle and the base notes take a longer amount of time.

So, here’s the deal:

  • Top notes take an hour (or two hours) to evaporate
Popular top notes include basil, spearmint, lemongrass, orange, etc.
  • Middle notes take between two to four hours to evaporate
Popular base notes are tea tree, nutmeg, chamomile, jasmine, etc.
  • The base may take a few days to evaporate!
These include cedarwood, balsam, oakmoss, etc.

Test The Blend!

In this step that you can ‘test’ your notes out and see whether or not they work together.

All you’ll need for this are:

  • Some cotton swabs!
  • Your essential oils
  • An eye dropper

Put one drop from each of your three essential oils onto a cotton swab and hold the swab (away from your nose!) and swirl it in the air.

So you like what you smell?

If not, then make changes until you find the perfect fit!

Let’s Do the Mix!

After you essential oil recipe has passed the sniff test, it’s time to start mixing!

You’ll need the following things in this step:

  • An eye dropper
  • A clean mixing bowl
  • A glass vial

There are two guidelines you can follow for the mix:

  1. The 123 Rule
This one says that for each drop of your base note, you should add 2 drops of your middle note and three drops of the top note.

  1. The 30-50-20 Rule
This rule suggests that your mixture should be:

    1. 30% top note
    2. 50% middle note
    3. 20% base note

All you’ve got to do is to add the essential oils to the mixing bowl using an eye dropper and then transfer the mixture to a glass vial!

Storage!

Essential oils are highly volatile compounds.

After making your blend, make sure to let it sit for a few days and store it in a glass bottle.

That’s because essential oils can react with other materials.

How to Use Your Essential Oil Blend: The Things You’ll Need

Before you try out your new blend, there are a few things that you’ll need.

Let’s take a look.

I feel that you should diffuse 8-10 drops of your essential oil combinations to get the best effect.

But…

Keep in mind that each and every blend is unique.

So, it is always better to add a small amount first to test out the fragrance and then make changes accordingly.

  1. This is great to know! I have heard there are only a few oils that are “real” and many that are not really what the label says. What is the best brand of essential oils?

    • How to know if an essential oil is 100% you take a piece of paper and let a drop or two of the essential oil you want to test onto the piece of paper let it dry.
If there’s a mark then it’s a fragrance oil IF there’s no mark then it’s 100% essential oil frangrance.

My go to for stock is: Young Living and Essential Oil Company.
